Expertise:
After 30 years of suffering with many chronic, debilitating and life threatening health conditions, and repeated misdiagnosis by more than 19 different doctors, Johnna was able to combine 25 years of intensive research, repeated trial and error and her intuition to finally heal herself.
At age 30 she was diagnosed with final stage Systemic Candidiasis and breast cancer. In her 30s and 40s, she became very ill and almost died. With each passing year the list of diagnosis and foods she could not eat grew longer. The combination of Systemic Candidiasis and undiagnosed leaky gut predisposed her to numerous food sensitivities, allergies and intolerances, including lactose intolerance and Celiac disease, chronic fatigue, severe clinical essential fatty acid deficiency, kidney, liver and endocrine system exhaustion, gastro-esophageal reflux disease, hypothyroidism, pre-diabetes, IBS, IBD, Seasonal Affective Disorder, chronic depression, and Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. Additionally, she has had four ectopic pregnancies, six separate cases of Lyme’s disease and MRSA. The combination of not being able to digest food for several years, and having an undiagnosed large abdominal hernia and 4 prolapses (bladder, uterus, rectum & intestines) for 25 years resulted in severe malnutrition, and permanent physical and neurological damage, leaving her disabled. She says, with a smile, that since she recovered her health in 2013, she feels better in her 50’s than she did in her early 20’s.
Her personal journey through illness to wellness was filled with life lessons that educated and matured her in ways that nothing else could. She believes experience is the best teacher, but that there are some things she would rather not have had to learn. Now she understands that Gods purpose and plan was to prepare her for the work she does now. She developed a passion for health and nutrition and a voracious appetite for knowledge, as well as empathy and compassion for others who are suffering with chronic health problems. After restoring her own health, she felt strongly motivated to help others recover theirs.
What qualifies Johnna in this work is the same as it is for all the experts; some with tremendous academic credentials, some from very traditional medical or nutrition education, and those who are self taught, through their own passion. Johnna combines research with insight. She does not theorize about how or why something works. She knows why things do or do not work, because she has tested, experienced, suffered through, analyzed, studied, agonized over, researched, figured it out, and worked on this within herself for 30 years. She successfully healed her body of numerous serious health conditions. Her experience and research dove-tailed perfectly with her formal training at The Institute for The Psychology of Eating (IPE), through the University of Colorado, Boulder, where she graduated with a 3.8 GPA. This qualifies her to talk about health, nutrition and the causes of disease, because it’s the healer’s journey that makes the medicine.
As a Certified Mind-Body Nutrition Consultant / Eating Psychology Coach, her work with clients synergistically incorporates nutrition education, lifestyle choices, health practices and weight loss mentoring, with information about the disease process. Johnna specializes in Systemic Candidiasis and Leaky Gut, and all the health problems they predispose to. She developed “The Candida Exit Strategy”, which helps the body restore Candida to it’s proper form, function and station, and heal Leaky Gut, so that food allergies and chronic health problems can be resolved. Johnna is also passionate about pet health. As a Veterinary Nutrition Consultant, Johnna helps pet parents understand the nutritional needs of their dog or cat and helps them find the best food for their four footed furry family members. Her passion is health and nutrition for people and pets, because pets are family too. With experience, training, compassion and empathy, Johnna is passionate about helping her clients navigate on their journey through illness to wellness, so they can reach their destination sooner and with less expense. She provides her clients with the knowledge and tools they need to recover their health, and sustain their results for the rest of their life. She sees how the healing arts are an area that attracts a lot of clients for life, but her goal is to help restore the life in her clients. She says, “I want to help my clients get to a place where they no longer need me, so I can help more people and not just the same people. I want my clients to become their most healthy, vivacious, creative, authentic and joyful self, and have the energy and emotional resilience to be present for their family, and to live their best life going forward.” She wants to be for her clients, the person she wishes she’d met when she was chronically ill and searching for answers and solutions to her continually deteriorating health. She prefers to help people avoid the path of disease all together by writing articles, speaking at events and giving workshops.
Mrs. Wheeler is also a member of The International Women’s Leadership Association. In 1997 she founded “Making Friends with People with Disabilities”, and teaches a course to educate kind hearted people about the world of people with disabilities. She helps them to be socially comfortable to reach out to and develop friendships with people who, due to their disability, don’t have access to the community, church and social opportunities. She lives her ministry every week, by visiting her friends in assisted living facilities and nursing homes, and looking for opportunities to take them to local events. She founded the Catoctin Mountain Community Information Network in 2007. She built and manages the website, community information board and Facebook group, which enables mountain residents to connect with each other and make their neighborhood more like a family. She has been a Christian for 30 years, married for 27 years and is privileged to be “Mom” to their two adopted daughters with Downs Syndrome. When she’s not coaching clients, learning something new or homeschooling her girls, she enjoys riding her horse on the mountain where they live, growing organic vegetables for her family, sewing, making new jewelry from old, and walking her two dogs. Another of Johnna’s passions is writing. Her book, “Taking Charge of Your Health – A Journey through Illness to Wellness,” is set to be released in the coming year.
